What to do in case you fall ill during your stay in Vienna.
Ill during your holiday?
Before beginning your holiday you should obtain an International Health Insurance Certificate (form E111) from your health insurance authority (in Great Britain they are available from post offices).
If you happen to forget, have the form sent to you by fax. Before you consult a doctor, assuming it is absolutely necessary and cannot be postponed - and only such cases will be recognized - you must exchange your international certificate for a valid Certificate of Health Insurance (Krankenschein). This must be done at the following address:
Wiener Gebietskrankenkasse, A-1100 Vienna, Wienerbergstrasse 15-19 (7A and 15A buses), Mo-Thurs. 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Fr 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
If this is not possible, give the doctor a copy of your international certificate and you will have to get the Certificate of Health Insurance afterwards; you must then deliver or post it to the doctor. The Wiener Gebietskrankenkasse accepts (original or faxed) International Health Insurance Certificates from all EU-countries, as well as Croatia, Norway, Slovenia and Turkey.
The addresses and telephone numbers of general practitioners and all kinds of specialists cann be found in the Viennese telephone book under the heading "Arzte". In the event of sudden, acute illness you should consult a hospital.
